Italy Clothing Size Chart: Italian Sizes to US, UK & EU

An Italian women’s size is four above the EU size (the French number), 32 above the UK size and 36 above the US size. So an Italian 44 is an EU 40, a UK 12 and a US 8, and an Italian 42 is an EU 38, a UK 10 and a US 6. Men’s jacket sizes are half the chest in cm at Benetton, and Canali’s UK or US jacket size is the Italian number minus 10 (IT 50 is a 40).

The pairings on this page come from printed charts: Benetton’s for women’s clothing, John Lewis’s for women’s IT 52 and 54, Canali’s for men’s UK and US sizes and Geox’s for shoes. Before you order, compare your own measurements in cm with the seller’s chart, because letters and even numbers change from brand to brand.

Letters (S, M, L) are the least reliable part of an Italian label: an IT 44 is an M at Benetton and John Lewis and an L at Sandro and Maje. Use the numbers and the cm columns first.

German sizes are not in the tables because the sources disagree. Benetton, Sandro and Maje print IT 44 as a DE 38, but a German store’s body chart can put the same body two numbers higher: Zalando Lounge’s German chart puts a 92 cm bust, Benetton’s IT 44, at DE 40. For German stores, go by the bust, waist and hips in cm.

Women’s jeans

No Italian chart we found pairs an Italian number with a jeans waist in inches, so there is no jeans table here. Match your waist in cm to the waist column above and check the seller’s own jeans chart. Calzedonia sells leggings and jeans by Italian number with cm bands: its M (42–44) fits a waist of 74–80 cm and hips of 94–100 cm.

The two rules agree within 2 cm up to IT 50 and drift apart above it: at IT 58 Benetton gives a 116 cm chest, while Next’s UK 48 fits a 122 cm chest. From IT 52, check the chest in cm on the seller’s chart.

Men’s shirts

Italian dress shirts go by collar size. At Canali, the shirt number lines up with the collar in cm, and its US column is the collar in inches.

The sources differ here. Canali’s dress trousers print a US size one different from the casual ones at IT 46, 48, 52 and 54, and Benetton’s waist in inches is the Italian size minus 13 to 15. Go by your waist in cm.

Benetton’s children’s sizes are the child’s height in cm, from 82 to 168. Benetton prints only the age bands (1–6 and 7–14 years), not an age for each size, so choose by height.

Shoe sizes

Italian shoe sizes are EU sizes: Benetton and Geox both print their shoe sizes as EU. The tables below use Geox’s chart, with its UK and US pairing and foot length. Geox says its chart may not match the number printed on the packaging.

Geox’s US numbers run higher than other brands’ for the same EU size. At EU 38, Geox gives a US 8, Benetton and Nike a 7 and Adidas a 6.5.

Nike and Adidas print shorter foot lengths than Geox for the same EU size, so use the foot length on the seller’s own chart.

Ring sizes

The Italian ring size is the inside circumference of the ring in mm minus 40. A ring with a 50 mm circumference is an Italian 10. This chart comes from a South Tyrol jeweller’s ring sheet; no US ring size is given because no chart we read printed one.

Quick answers

What is size 44 in Italy? For women, an Italian 44 is a US 8, UK 12 and EU 40 (Benetton). For men, an Italian 44 is a jacket with a 34 UK and US label, for a chest of about 88 cm (34.6 in). Letters differ by brand.
What is an Italian size 42 in the UK and US? A women’s Italian 42 is a UK 10 and a US 6, and an EU 38. Its bust is 88 cm (34.6 in) at Benetton.
What is size 38 in Italy? A US 2, UK 6 and EU 34 is an Italian 38. If your size is an EU 38, you want an Italian 42.
What is size 48 in Italy? For women, IT 48 is a US 12, UK 16 and EU 44. For men, IT 48 is a UK and US 38 jacket, with a 96 cm (37.8 in) chest at Benetton.
How do I convert Italian sizes to EU? For women, subtract 4: IT 44 is EU 40. That EU number is the French size.
What is an EU 38 shoe in the UK and US? At Geox, an EU 38 is a UK 5 and a US women’s 8. Benetton and Nike pair it with a US 7 and Adidas with a 6.5. Foot lengths differ by brand too.

Tips for ordering from Italian stores

Compare cm, not labels. Italian numbers and letters differ by brand, so match your bust, chest, waist or hips in cm to the seller’s chart.
Check which country’s number the label shows. Benetton warns that a size converted in an online shop may not be the number printed on the garment’s label.
Men’s sizes from IT 52. Charts give different chests in cm for the same size from IT 52 up: Benetton has 116 cm at IT 58, while Next’s UK 48 fits 122 cm. Read the chest in cm on the seller’s chart.
Returns. If you live in the EU, you have 14 days from delivery to withdraw from an online order, and you usually pay the return postage unless the store offers to. Read the store’s return terms before ordering, especially outside the EU.
