Canada Clothing Size Chart: US, UK and EU Conversion

Canadian clothing and shoe sizes are US sizes: Canadian stores such as Reitmans (sizes 0–22) and Aritzia (00–20) print US-style numbers and letters, with no UK or EU column. A Canadian women’s 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40, and a Canadian shoe size 8 is the US size 8.

The UK, EU and IT sizes on this page come from UK and European stores’ charts, not from Canadian ones. We found no Canadian standard for adult clothing sizes (the children’s standard, CAN2-49.5-M85, was withdrawn in 2012), so each store sets its own chart. Check the measurements in cm or inches before you order.

The same number is not the same fit everywhere. At size 8, the waist is 71 cm at Aritzia and 76 cm at Reitmans. Use the size chart of the store you order from.

The Canadian number is the US number, as Reitmans and Aritzia print it. UK, EU and IT sizes are the pairings printed by UK and European stores (Next, M&S, Boohoo, John Lewis, Sandro); Reitmans and Aritzia print only US-style numbers. EU is the French and Spanish number. IT 36 at size 0 rests on Wikipedia alone.

Brands cut the same number differently. At size 8, Aritzia’s waist is 71 cm against Reitmans’s 76 cm, and its waist is 2.5–5.5 cm smaller across sizes 0–16. The next table compares the bust for each letter at three Canadian brands.

In UK and US charts such as Next’s, a suit or jacket size is the chest in inches. Read across from your size.

We could not read a Canadian suit chart, so the chest in cm is Next’s body measurement for each inch size.

There is no EU column. The customary EU size is the chest in inches plus 10 (a 40 is a 50), but European charts run higher from about 38 in: La Redoute puts a 40 in chest at French size 52. In Europe, match your chest in cm to the store’s chart.

The neck size in inches and the collar in cm are Next’s “to fit” pairs. We could not read a Canadian dress-shirt chart.

There is no EU column. European collar sizes are in cm, and La Redoute UK pairs 16–16.5 in with 41–42 cm.

Shoe sizes

Canadian adult shoe sizes are US sizes: Aldo and Call It Spring list US sizes with UK, EU and foot-length columns and no Canada column. The tables below follow Nike’s charts. UK and EU numbers differ by brand, even at Canadian stores: a women’s US 9 is EU 40 at Aldo and Call It Spring but EU 40.5 at Nike, and a men’s US 10 is EU 43 at Aldo and EU 44 at Nike.

Are Canadian clothing sizes the same as US sizes? Yes for the numbers: Canadian stores print US-style sizes, so a Canadian 8 is a US 8. Each brand still cuts its own fit.
What is a Canada size 8 in UK and EU sizes? A UK 12 and an EU 40 (IT 44), from UK and European stores’ conversion charts.
What is a UK 10 in Canada? A Canadian 6, which is an EU 38. For women’s clothing, subtract 4 from the UK size: a UK 14 is a Canadian 10.

Tips for ordering from Canadian stores

Use your body measurements. Compare your bust or chest, waist and hips with the store’s chart rather than a converted number, as M&S and Next advise.
Body or garment. Check whether the chart lists body measurements or the garment’s own. Garment measurements add room to the body.
Between two sizes. Reitmans says to choose the size that best suits the fit you want. Its curvy fit is for hips at least 25 cm (10 in) wider than the waist.
Shoes vary by brand. The UK and EU numbers for one US shoe size differ between brands, and foot lengths differ too. Measure your foot and compare it with the seller’s chart.
Duties and VAT. If you live in the EU, VAT, customs and excise duty are always due on goods you buy online from outside the EU.
